Acceptance into the London Centre program

I fell in love with London my senior year of high school.  I was lucky enough to have my parents take me to England for my senior trip -- just me and them. Despite the patriotism that courses through my veins, and my forever loyalty to U.S. of A., I could not deny the beauty and wonder that London holds. It helped that I got to do what I wanted and didn’t have to adhere to the whining children that usually accompanied us on vacations. I could spend as much time as I wanted in museums and reading history excerpts with no one to complain about how boring they are. I was able to indulge in every intellectual impulse and desire. As soon as we boarded the train to Heathrow airport to return to the States, I knew I needed to go back. Luckily, BYU has provided me with that opportunity. I was beyond excited to get my email (as is customary in this day and age) of acceptance, and thrilled that I would be allowed to spend time immersed in a city I so desperately wanted to be a part of. It’s a little hard to believe that they’re letting me, a naive nineteen-year-old, travel across the pond and be set loose in the streets of London, but I’m definitely not going to draw unwanted attention to it.

What’s unique about my London experience (I love saying those words) is that I will be living in the UK at a time unlike any other. With Brexit coming to light, my fellow students and I will get to watch history unfold. I’m excited for this perspective I will gain, different from both Americans and Londoners. I’ll get to be part of this event, not hear about it from an ocean away. I look forward to gaining a love and understanding for England, as well as any true ‘Merican can.
